Conil also has some fascinating architecture and monuments, dating back centuries. The old part of the town has been declared a monument of artistic and historic interest. During the summer months, the tourist board organise special tours around the old quarter of Conil. The aim is to promote Conil’s historical, architectural and picturesque heritage, which is largely unknown, even to many locals.
The tours take place on Wednesdays and last for about 2 hours. It only costs 3 euros. The guides speak both Spanish and English. Up to 35 people can go at any one time. The starting point is the main tourist office, which is on Calle Carretera. Be there for 10.30, but pick up your tickets before hand, at the tourist office.
From the tourist office, you head towards the viewing point of the Conilete River. Then you visit the Misericordia. This building was set up in the 18th century and served as a refuge for poor families.
From here, you go down Calle Virgen, past the Meson del Duque, and arrive at the plaza de la Constitution. Here we find the Iglesia de Santa Catalina. This church dates back to the foundation of the Frailes Minimos de la Victoria in the 16th century. You will also be shown the Town Hall and El Portillo
Then it’s on to the Museum of Conil’s routes, where you will learn about many of the town’s traditions and customs. After listening to a talk in front of the Gardens of the Church of Santa Catalina, you walk up to the Torre de Guzman (Guzman tower). This is practically the only remains left, of a castle that was built in the 14th century. It was then reformed in the 15th century, and again recently. For years, it has been a tower of homage and is adorned with battlements and projecting parapets. |
